St. Benedict medals are thought to be protection against evil and a source of spiritual strength. The inscription around the cross reads “Eivs in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur” in Latin, meaning “ May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death”. St. Benedict was also the patron saint of students.
